Documenting browser workflows is one of those things that never happens because it is always manual. The ask: record what you do in the browser and generate step-by-step documentation automatically — self-hosted, no subscriptions, no per-seat fees. The architecture for something like this is not complicated to reason about, just tedious to build. A Chrome MV3 extension with a background service worker listens to every meaningful interaction in the browser. Each captured step is handed off to a NestJS backend, queued via BullMQ, and processed by a FastAPI worker that calls Gemini to generate a natural language description of the action. Screenshots are stored in MinIO. The frontend — a Next.js dashboard — assembles everything into a readable, editable guide. Seven services, one docker-compose up. Delivered a working demo in three months. Running internally today.
